Hans J. Wegner (b. Tønder 1914, d. Gentofte 2007)

Whitepainted shell-chair of laminated wood. Seat and back with original cushion in orange wool. Designed 1963. Made by cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen.

Provenance: Interior Designer Aase Vind Grytter, employed at Johannes Hansen 1965–1976. It is one of the two shell chairs that were given to her as payment for working overtime. The other orange painted with sand coloured cushions she sold in 1996 for a symbolic amount to Carl Hansen A/S, in connection with a re-edition of the chair in 1997. The shell-chair, which was presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guilds Exhibition in 1963 marks a climax in an evolution that started in 1949 when Wegner presented his prototype shell-chair. Although the chair has a strong visual appearance it was no commercial success in its time, and after this Wegner largely stopped working with laminated wood. Literature.
