Poul Henningsen (b. Ordrup 1894, d. Hillerød 1967)

“PH-Spiral Lamp.” Tripartite frame with spiral-shaped shade of white painted metal. Manufactured in 1942 by Louis Poulsen. H. 155 cm. Diam. 80 cm.

Literature: “Light Years Ahead”. Ill. and described p. 266–267 .The lamp was designed for the main hall in the University of Århus. “The shape of the lamp is geometric intended so that all exposed surfaces of the spiral was affected by light in the same angle and refelcting it out into the room under the same conditions.” The making of the spiral-shaped shade, which acts as if it was drawn in one long stroke, was monstrously difficult. The subsequent assembly of the lamp was very time-consuming, which in turn made the lamp very expensive.
