Edvard Munch (b. Løten, Hedmark 1863, d. Ekely 1944)

“La Promenade des Anglais, Nice”. Signed E. Munch 1891. Oil on canvas. 63×105 cm.

Literature: Reproduced in S. Bjørnstad and A. Eggum, “Munch og Frankrike”. Catalogue for the exhibition shown at Musée d'Orsay, Paris, Munch-museet, Oslo and Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt 1991–92. Réunion des Musées Nationaux, ill. no. 82, p. 115. Mentioned on p. 114: “In April, just before leaving Nice for Paris, Munch paints a couple of motives from Promenade des Anglais in full daylight. Paintings which have been characterized as a reflection of the artist's 'joie de vivre' succeeding his long period of illness. The pictures from the promenade are sketchlike and impressionistic in character and have a suck of perspective, which we recognize from many of Munch's earlier paintings from Karl Johans Gate i Kristiania (Oslo). In one of the motives (this painting) we see a woman carrying a basket of flowers and a thin man with a cane who are frozen as coloristic dots. The stiff character of the figures give associations to many postcards from the period showing people strolling along the Promenade des Anglais, this very famous sight in Nice”.
