Kvium first appeared at the Danish art scene when he exhibited at the exhibition “Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling” in 1980. Since then, Kvium with his depictions of lonely and grotesque creatures, has become an important painter, internationally compared to the Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum. In his works, Kvium is occupied with the human being and the existence. He paints creatures; morphs that are neither male nor female, embryos, very old men, fat creatures, thin creatures. These creatures being neither nor, everybody can identify with them. They are put at show, presented in the limelight like on a theatre stage where they themselves and their presence are at the centre. By showing the creatures in a lonely and desperate presence, Kvium forces the viewer to focus on the tabooed and repressed in the modern society. In this way he tries to open up our culture by forcing the viewer to look at himself from the outside and in this way realise all the things we don't want to se in our culture. As Kvium says: “My paintings ask us who we are and they look at the grotesque part of our actions”.
