Preben Hornung (b. Valby 1919, d. Frederiksberg 1989)

Composition. Signed Hornung 51. Oil on canvas. 79×112 cm.

Exhibited: Linien II, 1952. Exhibited: London, 1951. Preben Hornung's contribution to Danish art is characterized by a unique and persistent approach to his art. In spite of several changes of style his works show an unfailing consistency. An ascetic palette and a thorough moderation when it comes to artistic effects characterize the works of Hornung. Often it is almost minimalist examinations of everyday life details seen in a close perspective - details which get their own quiet and poetic life inside the four walls of the frame. With a variety of nuances, Hornung depicts motifs of an apparently non-spectacular and ordinary kind with a large but subdued sensuality. On this preview, you can become acquainted with the artist in a rich variety covering his various periods and expressions. From this brilliant concrete composition (1951) dating from the period of the Linien II (1947–52), to railway paintings of a more liberated kind (1959 and 1961), examples of the so-called Etudes (1959) and a wall painting (1963). From the late 1950s Preben Hornung began making larger interior decorations. From this part of his works, a large tripartite glass mosaic is offered for sale too.
