Henry Heerup (b. Copenhagen 1907, d. s.p. 1993)

The Mime Theater in Tivoli, Copenhagen, approx. 1940–43. Signed Heerup. Oil on canvas. 136×220 cm.

Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner's grandparents, who were friends of Heerup's. Heerup painted the picture on occasion of their wedding. Another direct inspiration might have been Tivoli's Centenary in 1943. The bearded gentleman on the left represents the older season-ticket holders. The man wearing black tie is conductor Elo Magnussen. The front figures are “swingpjattere” dancing jitterbug, amongst them Heerup in a flowered suit and Mille Heerup behind him. The painting has been owned by the same family since, for a period in the U.S.A, and it has not previously been offered for sale. The painting was deposited at Trapholt Art Museum, Kolding from 1992. The painting has decorated the museum's café in the mid 1990's and has been part of more exhibitions of the museum's permanent collection.
