Johan Thomas Lundbye (b. Kalundborg 1818, d. Bedsted 1848)

Purchased by Ribe Kunstmuseum in November 2016

“Fontænen ved Loggia dei Mercanti i Florens”. The fountain at Loggia dei Mercanti in Florence. Signed with monogram and dated 46. Drawing ink and watercolour on paper. 27×34 cm.

Drawing after the painting exhibited at Charlottenborg in 1847 no. 117. (Catalogue no. 17).

Exhibited: Nivaagaards Malerisamling, Ribe Kunstmuseum og Skovgaardmuseet i Viborg, “Lundbye og Kierkegaard”, 2013–2014 no. 32.

The drawing is inscribed by J. Th. Lundbye: “Et Billed af dette Indhold, samme Størrelse, begyndte jeg i Florens d. 30. April og sluttede det d. 20. May. Motivet er taget af Fontanen ved Loggia dei mercanti (Taccas Copi af det antike Vildsvin i Galleri Medici). Figurerne ere Erindringer fra Rom og det Neapolitanske”. (A picture with the same motif and size I began to paint 30 April and finished 20 May. The scene depicts the fountain at Loggia dei mercanti (Tacca's copy of the ancient sculpture at the Medici Gallery). The figures are memories from Rome and the Neapolitan).

In a letter to the Danish art historian N. L. Høyen, Lundbye writes from Florence about the painting, which he himself thinks is a little masterpiece. Alas it was not received as well as expected. It was very disappointing for Lundbye that the painting was not sold at the Charlottenborg exhibition.

Provenance: The author and art collector Leif Hasle.
