“Efter Aftensbordet”. After dinner. Signed and dated V. Johansen 87. Oil on canvas. 50×65 cm.

The friends are gathered around the table after dinner in the home of Viggo and Martha Johansen. The persons present are from left to right: bank cashier and art collector Johan Simmelkiær, almost hidden Ane Møller (later Thorup, Martha Johansen's cousin, born in 1871), Thora Madsen (married to Karl Madsen), the architect Thorvald Bindesbøll, Martha Johansen (standing), the painter P. S. Krøyer (seated in the center), the author Otto Benzon, the painter Kristian Zahrtmann, the two art historians Julius Lange and Karl Madsen (both standing).

This painting is a smaller repetition of the painting “Efter Aftensbordet” from 1887, exhibited at the Salon in Paris entitled “Mes Amis”. The large painting (109×140 cm) is in the John G. Johnson Collection, Philadelphia Museum of Art, inv. no. 1014.

Provenance: Book printer Axel Simmelkiær, whose father bank cashier and art collector Johan Simmelkiær was a close friend of Viggo Johansen and portrayed in this painting as no. 1 from the left.

We are very grateful to Elisabeth Fabritius, M.A. in History of Art, in cataloguing this painting.
