According to Herman Madsen, “Fynsk Malerkunst”, 1959 p. 56 pp. Ring had almost given up painting and was in a very depressive mood, when he arrived at Pedersminde (Rågelund), Fynen to visit Brendekilde in 1883. Here Brendekilde portrayed his friend, when things looked the worst. Nobody wanted to buy Ring's paintings and he had to work as a house painter. L. A. Ring was so broken down that he was thinking about emigrating to America.
