Large Danish Rococo mirror in gilt-wood frame carved with openwork flowers and foliage, the base centred by a pierced cartouche. On the back remains of wax seal, also marked with an indistinct inscription and inventory number: “Från det nerrifna Hörsch holm slott vid Köpenhamn ar 1770”. Mid-18th century. H. 193 cm. W. 84 cm.

Provenance: Hirschholm Castle. Hirschholm Castle, the queen's summer residence, also known as “ the Versailles of the North.” Lauritz de Thurah's masterpiece, completed in 1742. It was here that Struensee and the young Queen Caroline Mathilde's illicit liasion took place and in consequence the castle was burdened with such shame by posterity, that it was neglected and allowed to deteriorate, before finally being completely demolished in 1815.
