"Den Lille Ole med Paraplyen, Ham Kjender Alle Smaafolk i Byen". The Sandman is giving a boy nice dreams by holding his umbrella over him. Signed and dated E. Mundt 1894. Oil on canvas. 62 x 42 cm.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1894 no. 312.

Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale "Ole Lukøie" from 1842 inspired Emilie Mundt to paint this work. Ole Lukøje had two umbrellas, one decorated with pictures to give the well behaved children good dreams and one without for the naughty ones. They will have had a bad sleep and no dreams, when they woke up in the morning. The red umbrella decorated in a Chinese manner is placed over the head of the young boy Hjalmar from Andersen's fairytale. Another inspiration came from a very well known Danish children's song by Peter Lemche and Ole Jacobsen from 1873. The title of the painting is the first line of this song.
