Sergej Sergeevich Solomko (b. St. Petersburg 1867, d. Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois 1928)

Portrait of the French actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923). Signed and dated S. Solomko 23 (in Cyrillic). Watercolour on panel. Visible size diam. 25 cm. Gilded gesso and wood frame with faceted glass. The artist's business card with notes about the portrait and with a dedication to Hermann Heine is enclosed: “Je certifie que le Tableau peint à l'aquarelle sur bois et représentant le portait de Mme Sarah Bernhardt est de moi. Ce portrait est à M. Heine. Serge de Solomko. 27 Février 1927”. (2).

Provenance: Seller's grandparents, businessman Hermann Theodor Heine (1894–1936) and his wife, opera singer Olga Louise Heine, née Sørensen (1896–1961). Hermann Heine's parents, who were both Germans, immigrated to Russia in the last quarter of the 19th century, and he was born in Batumi by the Black Sea (Georgia). Olga Sørensen's parents, the father of German origin and the mother of Danish origin, also immigrated to Russia in the last quarter of the 19th century, and she was born in Krasnodar (Caucasus). In connection with the Russian revolution and subsequent civil war Hermann and Olga fled independently to Denmark, where they met in a guesthouse in Copenhagen. They moved to Berlin and got married, but moved back to Copenhagen in 1933. Then by descendants until today.
