Vilhelm Hammershøi (b. Copenhagen 1864, d. s.p. 1916)

Forest scene with slender tree trunks. Unsigned. Pencil on paper. 35×43 cm.

Provenance: Given as a gift to the lawyer Frederik H. Jacobsen (1883–1938) in 1920 by Ida Hammershøi, see the accompanying letter (In Danish): “Lawyer Jacobsen I would very much like to ask you to accept this small drawing, which was carried out by my late husband. Best regards from your devoted Ida Hammershøi 7th of April 20”. His descendants until today.

In the summer of 1896 Vilhelm and Ida Hammershøi rented a small house near Halskov Vænge (enclosure) on Falster. Vilhelm's brother Svend visited them there and he wrote in a letter to their sister Anna about his experiences. The two brothers went into the forest, known for its numerous ancient monuments. Svend painted the ancient monuments, while his brother painted the tall slender trees. The present drawing could be a study for “Store træer. Halskov Vænge, Falster”. (Large trees. Halskov Vænge (enclosure), Falster“). That one reproduced in Poul Vad, Hammershøi - Værk og liv”, 2003 p. 181.
