Nanna Hänninen (b. Rovaniemi 1973)

“Space II”, 2000. Ed. 1/5. C-print on Diasec, signed, titled and numbered on verso. 110×140 cm.

The Finnish photo artist Nanna Eleonoora Hänninen is educated from the Helsinki School of Arts. She often photographs white paper in abstract spaces (often also in white), creating what could be a snow-filled landscape. But she has also photographed exactly that: a snowy white-on-white landscape with a single miniature tree, as the photograph presented here. In Hänninen's monochromatic universe, objects melt together with the backgrounds, dissolving our sense of space and proportion. Hänninen has exhibited at numerous international galleries and museums including ARoS, Aarhus; Fiedler Contemporary, Cologne; Camara Oscura Gallería de Arte, Madrid; Taubert Contemporary, Berlin

“Thematically, Hänninen touches on the eternal discussion of art – especially photography – of the relationship between object and its representation. One invariably thinks of the famous René Magritte’s painting of a pipe, which in Hänninen’s case might well be rephrased as Ceci n’est pas du papier. She plays games with the observer, since the picture is in fact made of (photographic) paper.” Jens Friis: Artist Presentation at Brandts, Museet for Fotokunst, 2004.
