Indian and European artists, early 19th century

Studies of details of archictectural ornament. Agra district. Mainly pencil, some with additional watercolour. All on European paper. 55×42 cm-64×50 cm. (52)

Final part of the larger collection of highly decorative studies from the Agra district. The majority are excuted in the same manner, using identical shades of wash and/or watercolour but give only scarce reference to their source. The complete collection revealed two drawings inscribed respectively Benares and Futtehpore. Similar drawings, also many in number, are found in Victoria & Albert Museum. These were commissioned for the museum and taken from rubbings of stone decorations on monuments in Agra district, including Fatehpur Sikri and Sikandra for the purpose of recording the many and varied forms of ornamentation and to act as a stimulus to craftsmen in England.
