The gold medals from 1964–1968 are made of 9ct gold (Au 375/1000) weighing 21.39–23.00 g each including ribbon, while the gold medals from 1971–1977 are made of 14ct gold (Au 585/1000) weighing 36.61–39.15 g each including ribbon.
Phillip William Read, 1939–2022, was an English professional motorcycle racer who competed in Grand Prix motorcycle racing and won world championships seven times. He is famous for being the first competitor to win world championships in the 125cc, 250cc and 500cc classes. In 1979, he appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), while he in 2002 was named GP Legend and hereby entered Moto GP Hall of Fame. The gold medals from 1964–1971 was won riding Yamaha, while the gold medals from 1973–1974 was won riding MV Agusta and the 1977 gold medal while riding Honda. But he also managed to win bronze medals riding Manx Norton as well as Kirby Matchless.
