Jens Søndergaard (b. Øster Assels 1895, d. Skovshoved 1957)

“Havet” (The Sea), October 1935. Signed Jens Søndergaard. Oil on canvas. 125×146 cm.

Exhibited: Skandinavisk Kunstudstilling, Aarhus Kunstmuseum, 1965, cat. no. 142. Literature: “Samleren”, June 1936, ill. p. 104. Provenance: Doctor G. Soetmann. Acquired by Svend Aarkrog in 1958 for 10.000 DKK at Århus Kunstgalleri v/Dam.

Svend Aarkrog: “The picture originally belonged to Dr G. Soetmann, who owned a substantial collection, but in the divorce settlement the painting went to his ex-wife, who sold it to Dam the art dealer. Professor Else Kai Sass had the following to say about the painting: 'It is very fine texturally, and without weaknesses, which is often the case with Jens Søndergaard. It has a pleasing wholeness, and this is not the norm for Jens Søndergaard'”.
