Austria, Joseph II, 1741–1790, Patent of Nobility, for the brothers Carl Wilhelm and Ferdinand von Sames, 1775, 10 leaves on vellum, written in German with an illuminated page with coats of arms, signatures of Joseph II, Franz Georg von Leykamp and the reistrar M. de Molitor. Red velvet binding, large wax seal bearing the Habsburg arms contained within a brass case, kept in a contemporary metal box.
Carl Wilhelm von Sames was a professional soldier, first in Prussian and then in French service who, through his wife, a relative of Field Marshal Claude-Louis de Saint-Germain, was called to Denmark where he was appointed commander of the Oldenburg infantry regiment. He subsequently contributed to the modernization of the Danish military. In 1788 he was appointed commander in Rendsborg, where he died the following year.
