The Greek hero Theseus is lifting a heavy rock. Signed and dated E. Mai 1806 and inscribed Aegeus [..] Theseus. Drawing ink and pencil on paper laid on paper. Sheet size 15 × 17.5 cm.
Aegeus, father of Theseus, decided to go to Athens when Theseus was a boy. Before leaving, however, he buried his sandals and sword under a huge rock and told Aethra, his wife, that when their son grew up, he should move the rock, if he was heroic enough, and take the tokens for himself as evidence of his royal parentage.
The drawing shows Theseus lifting the heavy rock and the sword and sandals are underneath.
