Alvar Aalto (b. Kuortane 1898, d. Helsinki 1976)
“Paimio”. A very early lounge chair with frame and sculptural seat and back of moulded birch. Designed and manufactured 1931–1932 by Oy Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas Ab, Turku, Finland.
Provenance: Acquired in Stockholm, 1932 by present owner's great-grandparents as a wedding present to themselves.
The model was designed for the Varsinais-Suomi tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland. The lecture hall, at the east end of the dining-hall floor, was furnished with wooden chairs which later came to be known as the “Paimio chair”.
