Erik Matsson

A unique mahogany music cabinet, inlays of fruit wood and Brazilian rosewood. Front with fold-down leaf with marquetry showing a classicistic scenery with dancing women in front of a colonnade. Base with four carved pillars decorated with gold leaf and miniature busts of resp. Beethoven, Mozart, Lizt and Haydn. Made circa 1925 by Nyköpings Verkstäder for retailer for NK, Sweden. Metal plaque from maker. H. 140,5 cm. W. 89 cm. D. 48 cm.

Erik Matsson worked under the leadership of Carl Malmsten and Axel Einar Hiorth during their time at NK in Stockholm. He did however also design furniture in his own name such as this cabinet. Erik Matsson later became artistic manager at Mjölby Intarsia and was the driving force behind their succes in the next three decades.
