Professor P. O. Brøndsted, who was C. A. Jensen's patron in Rome when he was a young painter, commisioned Jensen to paint some of his British science colleagues in London among others C. R. Cockerell.

Sigurd Schultz describes in enthusiastic terms the portrait in the biography “C. A. Jensen”, 1932 p. 338 (in Danish): “The portrait of Cockerell shines with the cordiality that was Jensen's finest personal ability as a portraitist. Cockerell was a handsome man. The waving hair suits his quiet seriousness and the bright smile of the eyes. His eyes are remarkably expressive. They willingly follow the painter working in front of him.” In addition, Schultz praises Jensen's fine combination of colour in the painting.

Provenance: The painter Laurits Tuxen. His widow Frederikke Tuxen. Descendants of the Tuxen family until today.
