Tibetan thangka, decorated in colours and gold with intricate body-mandala, man standing on lotus, on the body the subtle energies, in their pure form, are personified as deities, he is dressed in rainbow coloured dhoti with gold decoration, each hand holds a stem circling around the arms with lotusflowers, surrounded by several figures. Inscribed in red on back with the five syllables OM, OM AH HUNG, HUNG to infuse the painting with the blessings of enlightened form, sound and awareness. The motif is possibly a Nepalese Hindu-inspired version. Tibet, c. 1900. Image 133×83 cm.
Provenance for this lot and lot 427: Explorer, adventurer and writer Jens Bjerre, born 1921. In October 1950 Jens Bjerre travelled to Himalaya on his quest to reach Tibet. Circumstances however were not to his advantage as China entered Tibet which forced him to turn back to Sikkim. The two thangkas were bought from Tibetan refugees on that occasion. Jens Bjerre has as the first and so far only Dane received the prestigious Cherry Kearton medal from the Royal geographical Society.
