Martin Kippenberger (b. Dortmund 1953, d. Wien 1997)

“Aesthetic by accident”, 1996. Unsigned. 21/25. Photogravure. Sheet size 66×96 cm. Unframed.

The subject in the work is composed by two images: Monet's Water Lilies and in contrast to this a picture of footprints on the floor of the train station in Düsseldorf after the fire. Martin Kippenberger had to leave Copenhagen just after the print had been made in late November 1996. It was agreed that he would return in the early part of 1997 and sign the stock of prints. Illness and his death on 7 March 1997 prevented this. The Danish Radeer association, Niels Borch Jensen and Kippenberger’s gallerist Gisela Capitain in Cologne then decided to sign the prints with an embossing stamp (Nachlass Martin Kippenberger).
