Laurits Tuxen (b. Copenhagen 1853, d. s.p. 1927)

“Badeliv paa Skagens Nordstrand. Middagssol”. Seaside life on Skagen beach in the midday sun. Signed and dated L. T. 09. Oil on canvas. 93×120 cm.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1910 no. 480. Provenance: Won by the present owner's grandparents at the Charlottenborg exhibition in 1910. Lauritz Tuxen was one of the most widely traveled of the Danish artists belonging to the Danish artist colony at Skagen at the turn of the 19th century. He enjoyed considerable domestic and international succes as a painter of royal portraits. However his heart lay in the new development in the art of painting that he saw flourish in Skagen and his enthusiasm was a great inspiration for both his pupils and his fellow painters. He was always interested in new currents in the arts and followed the development in France closely. In the present painting Tuxen demonstrates his eminent skill as a colourist as well as in spatial composition. In the present painting Tuxen seems to have been fascinated with the natural phenomenon in the sky that almost transmits the same wellknown dramatic effect that we find in the landscapes of Vincent van Gogh. Truely a masterpiece by Tuxen that now for the first time is coming up for sale.
