Northern Light – the Artists' Colony at Skagen

In June, we will be hosting our second “Northern Light – the Artists’ Colony at Skagen” auction at Bruun Rasmussen in Denmark, together with Bonhams’ global network. The first auction was held in September 2023 with an amazing result. Now, at a new themed auction, we will once again be presenting a unique selection of works by the Scandinavian painters who gathered at the northernmost tip of Denmark and formed the famous art colony at the end of the 19th century. We are currently looking for art works for the auction – the consignment deadline is 22 April.

It was no coincidence that Skagen as a place attracted artists, writers and other culturally prominent figures in a pioneering community of spirit during the decades leading up to the year 1900. Here the longing for light, air, the sea and a simpler life in harmony with nature could be satisfied. The artists arrived with the most modern thoughts and trends from the rest of Europe in their luggage. The plein-air painting truly blossomed, and the motifs revolved around the sunlight, the beaches, festive events in the art colony, the impoverished local population and the often harsh daily life of the fishermen. From the windiest place in Denmark, the artists created a profound breakthrough in Danish art. The best-known names in the colony were the Danish painters Peder Severin Krøyer, Michael Ancher, Laurits Tuxen, Holger Drachmann, Anna Ancher, Viggo Johansen, Carl Locher, Marie Krøyer, the Norwegian Christian Krohg and the Swede Oscar Björck.
