Mathias Ortmann (b. 1692, d. Copenhagen 1757)

A large Danish Rococo walnut commode, with giltwood sliding feet. Later white marble top. Mid 18th century. H. 93 cm. W. 100 cm. D. 61 cm.

Provenance: The commode has belonged to Major Iver Christoffer Krabbe (1731–1789), whereafter the commode was inherited by Minister Viggo Starcke (1895–1974). Curator at The National museum of Denmark Tove Clemmensen (1915–2006), 11 June 1954: “The wood craftsmanship is above standard for Ortmann's furniture. Fine dovetailing of drawers, the fine arched corner pilasters, the magnificent one-piece back panel. Wood crafted like door panelling. No other cabinetmakers have used the peculiar sliding feet. Very beautiful piece.” Similar commode at The David's Collection, Copenhagen.
