Vilhelm Hammershøi (b. Copenhagen 1864, d. s.p. 1916)

Landscape with a mill. 1879. Unsigned. Watercolour on paper. Visible size 17×23 cm.

On the reverse a dedication: “Hr. Stud. Jur. Ebbe Pedersen til Minde om min Søn Venligst E. Schwanenflügel”. Arkitekt (Law student Ebbe Pedersen in memory of my son. With kind regards E. Schwanenflügel. Architect).

Literature: Knud Vad, “Hammershøi”, 2003 p. 25. Here an almost identical drawing is reproduced.

As early as in 1871, at the age of 7, Vilhelm Hammershøi received teaching in how to draw and in 1879 he was accepted to the Academy of Fine Arts and studied there for the next 5 years. The last 2 years he also went to P. S. Krøyer's studio. The early works are fresh and spontaneous studies after nature and landscapes, as the present one with a mill.
