Harald Jerichau (b. Copenhagen 1851, d. Rome 1878)

In 1878, four years after the creation of the present work, Harald Jerichau paints his masterpiece “Den lydiske slette i nærheden af Sardes, Lilleasien (Tyrkiet)” - a monumental work with the measurements 137×307 cm. This breathtaking painting, executed in the year of his early death, is in the Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark) and came there already in 1878 as a donation from brewer Carl Jacobsen.
