Vilhelm Hammershøi (b. Copenhagen 1864, d. s.p. 1916)

“Parti fra Veile. Bondelænge”. Farmstead near Vejle. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 50×66 cm.

Provenance: Winkel & Magnussen auction 383, 1953 no. 76. ABR auction 517, 1988 no. 588.

In the year 1883 Hammershøi spent some time in the region of Vejle. The titles of his paintings that year confirm this. The motif of most of the paintings is a white barn or a farmstead with a dark thatched roof, like in the work here.

Michaëlis and Bramsen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Vilhelm Hammershøis no. 8: “Gaardlænge. I Forgrunden en grøn Havremark. Bagved en hvidlig Længe med mørkt Straatag” (Farmstead. In the foreground a green oat field. In the background a white farmstead or barn with dark thatched roof) is a minor version seen from another angle. That one sold at ABR auction 727, 2007 no. 1247 for 100.000 DKK. Here only a part of the building is seen in the background. The barn with the three windows has a much more dominant place in the present painting.
