Rembrandt van Rijn (b. Leiden 1606, d. Amsterdam 1669)

The descent from the cross, the second plate. Signed in print Rembrandt f. cum pryvl. 1633. Bartsch 81-II; Hind 103; BB 33-C, IV (of V); Nowell-Eusticke 81–4 (of 5). Etching and burin, laid on paper. Plate size 533×413 mm. Unframed.

Nicknamed “The Twenty Guilder Print”. It is suggested by scholars that Van Vliet (1628–1637) at some level was involved in the burin work of this large print.

A later, slightly uneven and greyish impression on very thin laid paper. Fine margins. The altered publishers address Amstelodami Justus Danckers more or less erased.

Condition

Attached at sides and corners to old mount. Margins with tears, fold and creasing. Glue stained on the margin corners and sides. Creased. Upper right corner with printers crease. Annotations in pencil along the lower margin.
