Michael Ancher (b. Bornholm 1849, d. Skagen 1927)

“Fisker, der roer”. A rowing fisherman. Signed and dated Michael Ancher 10. On the reserve a label from Klitgaarden with inventory number 14. Oil on canvas. 84×127 cm.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1911 no. 24.

Provenance: Acquired directly by Christian X and Queen Alexandrine from the artist and placed at Klitgaarden near Skagen; Hereditary Prince Knud and Princess Caroline Mathilde, Klitgaarden at Skagen; Her Highness Princess Elisabeth to Denmark.

As seen on the photograph the painting by Michael Ancher was located above the King's desk in his study, Klitgaarden.

The King and Queen liked Skagen and lket therefore built their Royal summer residence named Klitgaarden. The second photograph shows that the building was built in so-called Skagen-style by architect Ulrik Plesner. The King and Queen also cherished the Skagen art very much and they new many of the artists personally. The third photograph shows the King, Queen, Crownprince Frederik (IX) and Heredity Prince Knud visiting Michael Ancher, his wife Anna and their daughter Helga. The King and the artist are sitting on the bench.
