P. C. Skovgaard was invited to Vejle in Jutland by his good friend Orla Lehmann, who was head of the county council there for several years. Skovgaard was commisioned to paint the scenic landscape around Vejle for Lehmann. He was very fond of this countryside and came back several times to paint.
