This painting from 1940 is one of five portraits depicting Asger Jorn's brother Jørgen Nash. The work is an abstraction of the human being and underlines Jorn's artistic period in the early 1940s, when he was playing with painting as an ever-changing puzzle.  “I drew on transparent paper and then I laid several drawings on top of each other, so that they were linked and I could see them all at he same time. Each of the drawings was an abstract form, as clear and rich, as possible. I simply tried systematically to vary smoe primary forms....But the forms were different from each other and broke into each other. And then I was inspired by the chance effects which the over-layers gave of their own account”. (Atkins: “Jorn in Scandinavia”, pp. 38)
