Nero, 54–68 AD, Aureus, 66–68 AD, Rome, C 313, RIC 59, Calicó 443, 7.25 g, ex. coll. Proschowsky, scratches on reverse - nice style portrait
Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, the last emperor in the Julio-Claudian dynasty, is normally considered one of the great villains of history, and is most widely know for his ruthless pursuit of the early Christians and for singing and playing the lyre during the great fire of Rome in 64 AD. Ironically the reverse of the present coin depicts Salus, the goddess of security and well-being.
