Provenance: Theodor Philipsen (1911). Theodor Philipsen's auction 1916 no. 366. Agathe and Knud Neye's collection. Acquired at V. Vinkel & Magnussen 1923. Auction after the late Agathe Neye, Bruun Rasmussen auction 409, 1980 no. 16, reproduced p. 43 in colours.

Agathe and Knud Neye's collection was one of the finest Danish private collections. It was established between the two World Wars. After the death of Knud Neye part of the collection was sold in 1969, 1974 and 1976 at Bruun Rasmussen. Left in their home in Gruts Alle were Agathe Neye's favorite paintings among those this one by Philipsen.

Harald Leth, “Theodor Philipsen”, 1942 p. 12 mentions the painting and describes it (in Danish): “Philipsen continued to paint smaller paintings in a light and airy character as this fine autumn painting from ”Kimmerlev Sø“ with the soft rosy gray sky...”

Kimmerlev Lake is situated northwest of Køge.
