Heinrich Hansen (b. Haderslev 1821, d. Frederiksberg 1890)

“Parti fra klosteret St. Juan de los Reyes i Toledo”. From the cloister Saint Juan de los Reyes in Toledo. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 97×80 cm.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1861 no. 66.

Provenance: Count O. S. Danneskjold-Samsøe (1861). Winkel & Magnussen 297, 1943 no. 108, reproduced p. 4.

Heinrich Hansen painted the cloister in Toledo twice. The first and smaller version (46×38) was exhibited at Charlottenborg 1853. That one reproduced in Kunst i Privateje, 1945, vol. III p. 254. The present painting depicting this charming southern motif is a larger later piece by the painter's own hand. The motif is described by Jørgen B. Hartmann in Kunst i Privateje p. 254 (in Danish): In Heinrich Hansen's “Klostergang i St. Juan de los Reyes i Toledo” one feels that the warm light of the south and the medieval ruins have inspired the painter to observe the wholeness of the motif without missing the detail.
