N. Kock (, Danish Golden Age painter, c. 1850)

The sculptor David Jensen (1816–1902) modelling a female bust. Signed and dated N. Kock f. 1842. Oil on canvas. 40×32 cm.

About the artist: It is presumably Nikolai Kock (born 1811 or 1812), who was a student at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen 1834–1837.

David Jensen was a student of the sculptor H. E. Freund and worked in H. W. Bissen's studio 1840–1841. Afterwards he moved to live in St. Petersburg the rest of his life. He got his diplom from the Imperial Art Academy in 1845 and became a member shortly after.

The portrait could have been carried out in connection with his departure from Denmark.

David Jensen worked for Grand Duchess Maria Nikolajevna (1819–1876). The Duchess was a acclaimed art collector and chairman of the Imperial Art Academy in St. Petersburg.

The sculptor is known for his decorations of buildnings. At the Hermitage he executed statues, reliefs, busts and sculpture groups. His neoclassicial works still decorate the beautiful palaces along the canals in St. Petersburg.
