Exhibited: Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling, Den Frie, Copenhagen,1938, cat. no. 1.The 1930ies was a decade of many artistic breakthroughs in Denmark. It was also this decade and more precisely in the year of 1933 - that Ejler Bille and Vilhelm-Bjerke Petersenarranged their first exhibition entitled Linien. The name Linien was later to become the name of the group of artists that were to explore the abstract surrealistic painting, counting among their active participants also Henry Heerup, Asger Jorn and Else Alfelt besides the founders of the group. The painting “Videre Udvikling af Billedet Mand og to Kvinder” reflects the innovations of the time but also the tradition, displaying elements from both the naturalistic landscape and the abstract landscape painting. In its palette, strong expression and strict geometric forms, the viewer is reminded of a new era dominated by the modernist movement. The painting is divided into colour areas, the contours are drawn with dark colours and the various areas have subsequently been filled with colour. The artist has clearly been inspired by Kandinsky's paintings from the period 1910–11 which marks the transition from naturalism to pure abstraction with Kandinsky focusing on the compositionof colour and form.It is tempting to quote Richard Mortensen, commenting on a highly surrealistic work by Ejler Bille from 1934, now in the collection of the Holstebro Kunstmuseum: “Almost as if in a game of chess, the eye must move its piece from shape to shape, creating situations and unities: A merry game, a game of fools, a tragic game. Playing this game, you enter the meadows of poetry”. A few comments should be made on the somewhat primitive frame. It reflects a time where the artists were short of funds and their works difficult to sell. For the artists of the time, this implied a life with material poverty but with a constant belief and conviction that art can change life. The previous owner has most probably made the acquaintance of
