“Didaska”. Signed Asger J. 44. Oil on canvas. 65×69 cm.
Literature: Guy Atkins: “Jorn in Scandinavia 1930–1953”,no. 355, ill. p. 356.Provenance: The present owner's mother, an acquaintance of Asger Jorn and Elna Fonnesbech-Sandberg, received the painting as a gift from the artist in the mid 1940's. Not previously offered for sale.According to tradition the painting depicts Asger Jorn and Elna Fonnesbech-Sandberg. In the summer of 1944 Jorn spent a couple of months together with his son at Else Fonnesbech-Sandberg's house in Tibirke. Her pet name was “Dida” and at that time Jorn signed a number of his watercolours “Aska” for Asger. In this way the term “Didaska-compositions” came into being. Typically the Didaska-compositions shows two closely related figures with large heads. The motive has often been seen as an expression of the erotic attraction between Jorn and the 20 years older Elna Fonnesbech-Sandberg.
The canvas needs tightening. In need of a light surface cleaning.
