Ernest Mancoba (b. Johannesborg, South Africa 1904, d. Paris, France 2002)

Composition. Signed on the reverse E. Mancoba. Oil on canvas. 81×59 cm.

Provenance: Galerie Mikael Andersen, Copenhagen. The African painter Ernest Mancoba moved to Paris in 1938 to escape from the African Apartheid regime. In Paris he quickly became part of the group of artists working with the spontaneous abstract painting and in the late 40s he also became part of the CoBrA group. In 1942, he married the Danish sculptress Sonja Ferlov Mancoba a marriage with a mutual love of African art inspiring them both. Mancoba's paintings are a unique synthesis of modernism's play with the surface mixed with the African culture and its soul.
