The painting is a study for Krøyer's last major composition with women walking along the beach “Spadseretur på Skagens Strand”, 1909, 102×202 cm. That painting stood unfinished on Krøyer's easel at his death, and was sold at Bruun Rasmussen auction 612, 1995 no. 38.
