Finn Juhl (b. Frederiksberg 1912, d. Ordrup 1989)

“FJ-44”. Extremely rare teak dining table with extension and two extra leaves. Special extension partly covered with black and white formica. Fittings and “shoes” of brass. Made by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, circa 1944–45. H. 73,5 cm. W. 90 cm. L. 145./270 cm. (3)

The model was presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition in 1944 as a table for the iconic FJ-44 chair. Present table originates from the House of Finn Juhl, Kratvaenget in Ordrup. The table was sold in the late 1980s by his partner Hanne Wilhelm Hansen to the gallery “Klassik”. Present owner acquired the table from the gallery “Klassik” in 1993. The table presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition was made in Mahogany and Oregon pine but apart from this table and the present one, no other examples are known. The table falls under one of the two general paths that Finn Juhl's pursued in his designs. The table follows the trail characterized by straight lines, sharp edges and a simple functional form, where the artistic sense of Finn Juhl is expressed through the use of colurs in the piece itself. This path can mainly be found in his tables, cabinets, bookcases and desks and stand in a fertile contrast to the other direction which characterizes the majority of Finn Juhl's designs; the organic and sculptural features as seen in his iconic chairs. The fertile ground found in the contrast between these two paths is made crystal clear when Finn Juhl exhibits his pieces for cabinetmaker Niels Vodder at the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker's Guild Exhibtion in 1944. Today, the FJ-44 models are the most sought after pieces. The excessively sensuous and organically shaped FJ-44 armchair, only made in approximately 12 pieces, is placed at this simple functional dining table with the subtle colour inlays in the frame.
