Although Jewel Cross was one of the shorter-lived of the late Anglo-Saxon coin types, it is also one of the most interesting, for it offers a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of the political developments between Cnut's death in the autumn of 1035 and Harold's acquisition of sole power early in 1037. While the Jewel Cross type in the name of Harold is fairly common, and the type from Harthacnut at least obtainable, the Cnut issue is of legendary rarity and almost unheard of in this condition
