Queen Anna Sophie's Chinese cabinet

A Chinese style black, red and gilt lacquer cabinet on giltwood stand, the sides and top decorated overall with landscape scenes, the doors mounted with shaped gilt brass corner ornaments, lockplates and hinges, enclosing variously sized conformingly-decorated drawers with imitated red tortoiseshell, the stand and cresting with foliate carved pierced frieze, on openwork supports with 'X'-shaped stretcher. The cabinet and the stand with inventory mark crowned 'AS 1731', for queen Anna Sophie. England, late 17th century. H. 207 cm. W. 108 cm. D. 52 cm.

Provenance: The cabinet has belonged to Anna Sophie Queen of Denmark neé Reventlow. After her death in 1743, the cabinet was sold at auction and came with a tenant to the manor house Odden and from there via Birkumgaard on Gjøl to Apotheker S.C. Strøyberg at Jens Bangs Stenhus, Aalborg. Then by descent.

Remarkable similar cabinet on stand with the same decoration and size is in the collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. This cabinet is dated 1690–1700 and belonged to Sir Richard Hill (1655–1727), who became Deputy Paymaster to William III's forces in Flanders.
