Johan Thomas Lundbye (b. Kalundborg 1818, d. Bedsted 1848)

Provenance: The artist's mother widow Cathrine Lundbye. Professor J. L. Ussing, acquired directly from the artist's mother. M. E. Ussing (1931). Descendants of J. L. Ussing until today.

Professor J. L. Ussing was a good friend of Lundbye. Ussing had also signed up as a volunteer, and describes in his memoirs how he stood next to “min kjære Ven” (my dear friend) Lundbye during a shooting practice of the volunteers in April 1848 in Copenhagen. It was on this occasion, he saw Lundbye for the last time.

This painting is one of Lundbye's last. He paints it during a 14-day stay in February 1848 at the farm Godthaab in Hellebæk in Nordsjælland. Shortly after he signs up as a volunteer in the war and on 18 April he leaves Copenhagen. 25 April 1848 Lundbye dies in Bedsted in South Jutland of an accidental shot.
