Finn Juhl (b. Frederiksberg 1912, d. Ordrup 1989)

Unique wall-mounted sculptural sofa. Separate seat and back mounted on four greypainted metal fittings. Seat upholstered with lightblue wool, back with light brown wool. Made circa 1950 by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder. L. 290. H. 103 D. 83 cm.

Provenance: Acquired by current owner directly from the estate of Niels Vodder, son of the “original” cabinetmaker Niels Vodder. The sofa is an elaboration of that bench that Finn Juhl as early as 1942 had designed for the terrace outside the conservatory at his own house in Ordrup. It was first presented at the Copenhagen Cabinet-makers´guild´exhibition in 1950 together with a trial chair for the UN-assembly hall. Later it was included in the interior that Finn Juhl arranged for the Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum i Trondheim in 1952. A interior that consisted of Juhl´s own pieces, one table by Peder Moos, and art by a.o. Erik Thommesen. The sofa was also included in the exhibtion “ Fremtidens Bolig” - “Home of the future” in 1954. Few examples are known in different lengths, made by special orders for a very few private interiors. The sofa stand as maybe Finn Juhl´ best attempt to erase the border between furniture and sculpture, between art and function.
