P. S. Krøyer (b. Stavanger 1851, d. Skagen 1909)

Portrait of Joh. Fr. Warburg (1863–1909) with a cigar, sitting at the piano. Signed and dated S. K. 10. Febr. 1907 and inscribed Joh. Fr. Warburg. Ink on paper. Sheet size 28×22 cm.

P. S. Krøyer was admitted to Middelfart sygehus (Middelfart hospital) - an asylum - in the beginning of 1907. Presumably, the portrayed gentlemen was one of his fellow patients at the hospital. In his euphoric periods Krøyer drew some of the other patients,“Typer fra et kurhus” (Types from a health resort) these portraits allegedly were called. In another of Krøyer's drawings from the stay in Middelfart the piano here is seen too.
