Toini Muona (b. Finland 1904, d. 1987)

A tall “Heinä” grass stoneware vase decorated with grey and white spotted glaze. Signed monogram TM. Made by Arabia, Finland 1945–1950. H. 45 cm.

Arguably the most iconic piece of pottery from the golden post-war era in Finland, this rare piece exemplifies the simple sculptural form associated with Finnish design. Literature: Jennifer Hawkins Opie, Scandinavian Ceramics & Glass in the Twentieth Century, London, 1989, p. 22 (for similar example). The Heinä vases were among Muona's works that won the Gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1951.
