Karl Sune Detlof Bergström (1916–2004) was awarded the Nobel Prize base in Physiology/Medicine for “discoveries concerning prostaglandins and related biologically active substances”. Bergström ranked among the most prominent of all Swedish 20th century scientist holding a number of important academic positions of which can be mentioned: Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1966), member of the Nobel Foundation Board of Directors in Sweden (1975), President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (1983), member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (1985)
